Theme for International Youth Day 2022 is “Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages
We, the United Nations Association of Ghana (UNA-GH) and our youth wing, United Nations Youth Association- Ghana (UNYA-GH), stand together to extend our compliments to the world and we solidarize with the youth as the world marks Internatonal Youth Day 2022.
We acknowledge the roles the youth of all ages have played in all facets of human life across the globe.
In particular, we appreciate the intervations the youth have made during the global fight againt COVID-19 Pandemic, Climate Change and vigourously engaging in SDGs campaigns, Digital Innovation programs among others across social networks.
This year’s theme underscores the point alluded to by the late Kofi Annan, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, the youth should not only be part of the problem but solution as well.
This was later unanimously reaffirmed in the UN Security Council Resolution 2250, on 9th December, 2015, a ground-breaking resolution on Youth, Peace and Security which recognizes that “young people play an important and positive role in the maintenance and promotion of international peace and security.” The resolution also identifies five key pillars for action: participation, protection, prevention, partnerships and disengagement and reintegration. This landmark resolution urges Member States to give youth a greater voice in decision-making at the local, national, regional and international levels and to consider setting up mechanisms that would enable young people to participate meaningfully in peace processes.
This further gives space to youth within the framework of third generational rights; solidarity; collective rights of society or peoples which go beyond International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights( ICCPR) and International covenant on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights (ICSECR). It urges countries to explore innovative ways of protecting the environment, advancing technology, and networking among peers.
The United Nations Association-Ghana encourages the youth to consolidate the gains they have chalked up so far in these areas
and refrain from any social vices that will destroy the path of intergenerational connectivity.
To this end, we salute every gallant youth of all ages who has contributed meaninfully to Good Governance, Rule of law, Democracy and Socio- Economic Development of every country including the Republic of Ghana.
Congratulations!
On Behalf of United Nations Association- Ghana
